The standard reaction when things don't go the way one or the other of the girls want:
Lydia is usually able to make her wishes known. If she goes over to the fridge and tries to open it while shouting, it means she is thirsty.
Fortunately, she settles down quickly to her usual sweet self once we take care of whatever the problem is.
She's growing up quickly. Tanja has put her hair up in pigtails a few times - I think she looks cute.
We've been taking advantage of the Fall weather and spending a fair amount of time outside before winter comes. Karina is getting brave and now gets excited to be lifted up into trees.

Lydia decided she had to join in and they had a blast running around. At this point, the most difficult part was getting them to stand still long enough to take a picture.
Finally, we succeeded (with Karina anyway) by bribing her with M&M's if she took good pictures with Lydia. Lydia still didn't understand that she was supposed to stand still and be cute for the camera, but we did manage to get a couple cute ones, though they refused to cooperate in spots were the background would have been pretty.
When Karina was a baby, we took some really beautiful pictures of her being tossed into the air in Washington, DC during the Cherry Blossom Festival with the blossoms in the background. Since then, we have recreated that shoot every year with her and Lydia as well. This year, I noticed one of the trees with beautiful Fall colors in our neighborhood and suggested we try doing the same shot in a Fall version with the leaves in the background. I'm very pleased with the results. I don't know how many more years we will do it like this (as they are getting heavy and it's hard for me to toss them up and keep them stable long enough for the camera to focus on them and take the picture), but I think it is a fun picture idea. We now have a couple of these hanging in our home, so you can tell that we were impressed with them.

Karina has been very active lately. She loves playing at pre-school and nursery at church. We have been working with her at hopping as it is apparently a useful skill neurologically in preparation for reading. She also loves running around and playing chase, and Lydia is always an eager participant as well. Today, we drew a hopscotch game on the driveway with chalk and Karina loved jumping in each numbered square in order (she is not quite ready to hop reliably without falling down). Lydia thought that looked like a lot of fun and was ecstatic when I picked her up and helped her "jump" in each square too (her normal "jumps" consist of her bending her knees, squatting down, and then standing back up).
