We kept up our annual tradition of heading down to Washington DC's Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms. This time we were there during the first day of peak bloom, which was perfect timing for the flowers, though it was a little overcast that day. We do seem to get less and less ambitious each year though, as we have finally accepted that there is no way for us to walk all the way around the Tidal Basin with three little kids. We basically just walked to the Jefferson Memorial, had a picnic and walked back to the car. This somehow took nearly the whole day.
Family shots were hard to come by. It takes a skill we lack to get three kids to cooperate.
Karina is a goof ball and likes to be the star in pictures:
We never did make it to our favorite photo spots, but the girls had a blast playing along the bank of the basin, as if it were a beach. We had great views of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial from our picnic spot. Not too many cherry blossoms though as the trees there are younger and smaller.
Our only shot of all five of us that a passerby snapped:
Atop the Jefferson Memorial:
We have had lots of time for play at home since Karina is off from school on Spring Break and we are still a little reluctant to take Derek out too much to confined indoor places.
Karina designed a firefighter costume, with a red jacket and black boots, then struck a super-hero pose:
This year, Nate's birthday fell on Easter Sunday. That made it doubly exciting for the girls as there was birthday cake, and also Easter egg hunts, with Easter basket presents for them. I made Nate German chocolate cake for his big day, and Karina and Lydia helped him blow out his candle.
Nate is now an honorary Bronco with his very own jersey. He deliberated for a long time deciding which player's number and name he wanted on his jersey, but finally settled on the retired Elway, scrapping Von Miller in case he switches teams. I don't have a picture, but it was fun when Nate tried on his jersey for the first time and looked in the mirror at himself. He was grinning from ear to ear and pumping his arms, probably imagining he was a player himself.
The girls love Easter egg hunts and we had been having them daily all week, and still have them daily now. They also went to one Easter egg hunt at playgroup earlier in the week, before our official one on Sunday (those were the only two hunts where the eggs actually had something inside of them).
Kind of funny that the bubble from Lydia's train bubble maker ended up right in front of my eye for the picture.
Derek is adorable and is getting more alert each day. He tracks objects well with his eyes, likes his play gym and his swing, and enjoys listening to music. He is hit or miss at night, and enjoys keeping us, and especially me, up at night. He also demands a lot of attention during the day. According to our scale he's about 12 pounds already, and not even a month old.
Karina asks multiple times per day if she can hold Derek. She is a good big sister.
