We have a strange but fun tradition in our neighborhood of attacking the children coming off the bus on the last day of school and engaging them in a water fight. This year, Lydia didn't want to get wet and so she sat it out. But Karina had a lot of fun taking the squirt gun and spraying all the other kids at the bus stop.
Derek had even more fun being like the big kids with his little squirt gun.
He squeezed a water balloon too tight and it exploded in his hands to his delight.
He was very brave chasing down bigger kids to squirt them (and they were remarkably patient to not retaliate and dump a trash can full of water on his head).
We had heard about Purse State Park (about an hour and a half away), a wildlife refuge near the mouth of the Potomac River that is famous for shark teeth fossils. We had never been there, but decided to take a trip one Saturday for a day trip. Lydia had fun swimming in the river.
Sitting in the camp chairs on the beach was relaxing.
We came armed with buckets and shovels.
And once we figured out what we were looking for, we found shark teeth mixed into the pebbles along the beach. The shark teeth are from the Paleocene Era, so 60 million years old!

The kids frequently pull pillows and couch cushions together to make forts.
Derek was silly one day wearing a unicorn headband with his church clothes.
Lydia has a nice smile when we can capture it on camera.
Tanja has been growing some vegetables outside on our deck and the kids have been helping her water the plants. One day, we were excited to have some mature carrots to pick, so the kids helped with the harvest.
They're more crooked than what we would find in the store, but I thought they tasted good.
The kids weren't convinced (probably because they didn't look like the the baby carrots we buy from the store and eat at home).
Karina has been jealous of Lydia's bedroom because Lydia has a comfortable chair in her room that we read stories in. She and Tanja found a nice looking chair at Costco one weekend and we decided it was worth buying it, so now Karina has her own chair in her room too.
During Lydia's last checkup, the doctor suggested she might need glasses. We took her to an ophthalmologist and confirmed it. I first got glasses when I was a year older than Lydia, but her prescription might not be as strong as mine was initially. I hope her eyesight doesn't end up as bad as mine. In any event, we ordered her some really cute frames online and have been working to impress upon her that she needs to be responsible and take good care of her glasses. Thus far, she really doesn't wear them very long, which the doctor said was fine, as her prescription is 'neutral' right now, about -1.50.
It's been a hot summer in Maryland. We left a box full of crayons outside one day sitting on our patio table on our deck. When I brought it in that evening, I noticed the crayons had melted and fused together. Here's Karina with the evidence. Oh well, guess we needed to get new crayons anyway.
We took another trip to Hershey Park. The kids had fun, though we didn't take many pictures this time around. Tanja was impressed by this brave squirrel that had no fear of getting up close to the stroller, likely in search of some dropped food.
Derek and Karina drove their own car around the racetrack.
The kids are all very sweet and caring with Snoopy and he is such a good boy.
