We are finally getting back to the blog to play catch up, so here's what we did in July.
Derek lost his first tooth (and I think he is the fastest to lose his first tooth of all our kids). Karina and Lydia were both 6 or 6 and a half when they lost their first tooth. Derek's tooth was really loose by the time it was ready to come out - here it is hanging by a thread. His adult tooth had already popped up.

We went to the Baltimore Inner Harbor during a heat wave to have a pirate adventure on a cheesy pirate cruise. Derek was thrilled to get dressed in his pirate garb and meet "real" pirates while they performed silly skits and played games.
The kids were able to use water cannons mounted on the ship to shoot a bad pirate that was zipping around in a motorboat to try and steal our treasure during the main portion of the cruise.

Our neighbor friends brought over their puppy Renni one day and the kids loved playing with an energetic puppy. Snoopy wasn't as impressed.
Renni also got pushed around in the doll stroller.
Derek decided Snoopy needed to be a pirate, just like him, with a bandana for a belt and a homemade cutlass. Again, Snoopy wasn't impressed, but just went along anyway.
We went to visit the annex of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport housed in what amounts to a very large airport hangar. It was fun to see all the space gear like the Columbia space shuttle and lunar landers and modules.

The grandparents came for a very quick visit, primarily for Lydia's baptism at the end of July. Grandma brought a puzzle of famous inventors to work on and the girls helped her.
Grandpa brought Derek his sword that Grandpa made for him the last time we were in Idaho and he and Derek had a few duels.
And of course, no visit from Grandpa would be complete without a game or two of Octopus Grandpa attacking and grabbing the kids while Derek desperately tries to help them escape.
We took them to DC for a visit to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. The kids were very interested in the gemstones and minerals, the dinosaurs, and the animal exhibits. Here's Grandpa with the girls in a cave exhibit for early humans.
When we left the museum and could take our masks off, we got a good picture at the fountains near the sculpture garden across the street from the museum.
Lydia was baptized wearing Tanja's Aunt Patty's handmade vintage communion dress from France circa 1960 (the same one Karina was baptized in). It was a little short and tight on Lydia, but for sentimentality, there was nothing else worth wearing for that special occasion, and it is such a beautiful dress.

The grandparents had to leave the next day, so it was a really quick visit. We said a quick goodbye as we were getting ready for church.
That afternoon, we made homemade ice cream in ziplock bags since the girls were going to miss a church activity later in the week doing it. I thought the end result was tasty enough.
