Once we arrived in Detroit, we soon met up with my parents who had flown in from Miami (after flying there from Norway 2 days earlier).
I wasn't there for it, but apparently bride-to-be Nalina and Karina were having fun dancing and jumping together at the Welcome Reception on Thursday evening:
Tanya and her boyfriend Antony flew in from Australia for the wedding. Here they are with Nalina's mom, Aunty Chuchuen.
We might have to plan a trip to visit them in Australia:-)
Morfar looks like his smile is going to explode; he is so happy to see Karina.
On Friday and Saturday, we explored what Detroit had to offer. The waterfront was beautiful and it was fun looking across the river to Canada. We didn't go to Canada because Nate and I have expired passports, and we didn't think we would have time to get a passport for Lydia anyway.
Karina liked the hat Mormor bought to protect her face from the sun. It was a little big for Karina, but she sure is cute in it though:
We finally got a picture of Lydia smiling:-) She was quite content to have Morfar cooing at her.
Mormor is awesome too, but it is hard to catch those smiles on camera.
We got dressed up to go to the rehearsal dinner and got a lovely family picture out of it, though we should have planned for a better backdrop than the middle of the hotel room. Lydia was a trooper and slept through all the noise and a live band playing at the venue.
Karina (and her parents) were very excited to receive some Norwegian chocolate as a present from Mormor.
On Saturday, we headed to the Eastern Market again. We were there on Friday too and had some delicious lunch nearby at Russell Street Deli (apparently well-known in the area), but the market itself was closed, so we returned on Saturday. Snoopy was being his normal timid self, and thought it was pretty scary to walk on the sidewalk in a strange place with strange people. He had to suffer through the shame of being carried. Nate enjoyed the workout. Snoopy actually did better in the crowded market and didn't need to be carried.
The market had lots of fresh produce, yummy breads, and some homemade donuts my mom bought:-)
While we were in Detroit, Transformers 4 was being filmed. It was designed to look like a destroyed Hong Kong. We saw Chinese billboards, crashed cars, the Optimus Prime Semi, overturned trains, etc. I suppose that given all the abandoned buildings in Detroit, it wasn't too hard to make an area in the middle of the city look destroyed.
The wedding was on Saturday night, but I'll put those pictures in a separate blog post.
On Sunday morning we headed to a wedding brunch before starting back on the long drive home. It was fun to chat more with people and enjoy yummy Chinese food (Nalina's mom owns the restaurant the brunch was at). Karina ate her fill of grapes:-)
Karina was beyond exhausted after several days of this vacation. She got much less sleep than usual because a) naps were frequently missed or cut short, and b) she slept in the same hotel room as us and wouldn't go to sleep until everyone else did, and c) in the morning she would get up too early, whenever Lydia got up.
It was nice to have a break and let Mormor and Morfar hold the sleepy heads:
As tired as Karina constantly was, she sure thought it was super exciting to have Snoopy sleep in a big bed with her. Snoopy appreciated his high status of sleeping on Karina's bed in such comfort :-) Until she finally would go to sleep each night, she would lay in bed with a huge grin on her face and would wave at Nate and me. It was a lot of fun to her.
Unrelated to the trip to Detroit, Lydia had her 2 month doctor's appointment today. Her stats were:
Height: 24 inches (95th percentile)
Weight: 12 lbs 4 oz (70th percentile)
Head Circumference: 39 cm (70th percentile)
Other than that, she is healthy and strong, progressing as she should.
