Karina and Lydia attended a cultural/heritage night virtually for girls ages 7-11 at church. They dressed up in their Norwegian bunads. I wanted to take pictures outside, but there were so many cicada exoskeletons and cicada carcasses and live cicadas in the grass that the girls wanted a mat to stand on. You can see cicada exoskeletons in the mulch around the tree.
Nate had to carry Karina back inside so she wouldn't step on cicadas.
All three kids had a great soccer season and are looking forward to playing again next year.
Lydia's 2nd grade class had a get-together at a playground. Her teacher, Mrs. Bifsas, is in a black shirt, and Ms. Sturgill, the teacher's assistant, is in the grey shirt.
Derek went to a birthday party for a boy in his class name Johan (his family is from Bangladesh). Derek loved running around with kids. He had actually never met Johan in-person before because Johan was virtual the whole school year.
Girl Scouts of Central Maryland is selling Camp Ilchester, across the street from the kids' school, Ilchester Elementary. Despite the camp being profitable, they are selling it to developers to cover unprofitable aspects of Girl Scouts. So now a ton of houses will likely be built quickly and people across the community are very upset about the situation. Lydia's troop and other troops had a last hurrah on the property. I find it ironic that Camp Ilchester has a statue of the Lorax on the property with the inscription "Unless." In the Dr. Seuss environmental book, the Lorax, this is the exact kind of situation it warned against.
Lydia turned 8! Karina made a cool Lego birthday sign for her.
Lydia's favorite present was this huge snake. She had seen it at Ikea a few months ago and I refused to buy it because I thought it was gross and too realistic. Then of course that was the one thing she absolutely had to have for her birthday. She now sleeps with her python, who she named Scarlett.
She requested chocolate mousse cake.
We went to a new playground in Blandair Park on the afternoon of her birthday, after the girls had finished a half day at school.
The last day of school was the June 15th and as usual there was a huge water balloon and squirt gun fight at the bus stop as the kids got off the bus. Derek thought it was the best thing ever. Our Star Wars Jedi took to throwing water balloons at the other kids and didn't mind dodging other kids' shots or getting blasted with water. He was soaking wet by the end. It was a little boy's dream come true.
Lydia did not want to participate in the water fight. Karina only made it to the tail end of it because of a miscommunication about how she should come home. The water balloons were gone by the time Karina arrived, but she loved using the squirt guns.
