Wurzburg

We arrived in Stuttgart on Saturday night, where we will be staying for 14 nights total. We settled into our hotel (and we love how wonderful the wireless signal is!) and enjoyed breakfast the next morning. Both hotels we've been at so far have had wonderful breakfasts. Nate loves the musli best, and seems to have 2 bowls of it every morning - one with milk and one with yogurt. I have been enjoying the variety of fresh hot whole wheat rolls with yummy jams. I've had a cold the past few days and have been avoiding milk, but tomorrow I'm excited to have the milky hot chocolate they have. Breakfast also consists of the German standards of deli meats, cheeses, cucumbers and peppers for open-faced sandwiches, freshly made eggs prepared in different ways, sausages, juices, and breads. We've been eating so much for breakfast, that we're not hungry again until around dinner time.

After settling into the hotel in Stuttgart, we were ready for a day trip on Sunday. We decided to go to historic Wurzburg. Wurzburg was one of the many German cities that was completely rebuilt after WWII (most German cities with populations over 100,000 were leveled in the war). First we visited an opulent palace called the Residenz. We managed to sneak in one picture without getting caught:


The palace had grand rooms, 3-D art, and a massive fresco. We were somewhat amused about one of the running themes in the artwork. The four continents (Europe, Asia, Africa, and America) were depicted by women riding on an indigenous animal to the continent. In the fresco from the picture above, America was portrayed by a savage woman riding on an alligator and toting several severed heads. Guess we are pretty uncivilized compared to Europe (the continent shown in the picture above). Later on we got Snoopy out of the car and toured the attached Baroque gardens. Snoopy has been very popular among the Germans. This flirt has had several women and girls smiling and fawning over him, but this one took the cake when he got a kiss from this little German girl!

Finally we went on a walking tour of the city before it was time to drive back to Stuttgart.
